Gangnam Style!

As requested, I though i would take a look at Gangnam Style!

This is a meme which is spreading as I type! It’s become a new colloquial term and spreading very quickly across the internet and is already embedded in pop culture and music history.

I had seen a few of these gif’s around, and various spoofs there are (there are many other ones with  Han Solo and other characters)

But I didn’t realise what they really were and have only just watched the whole clip of it!

So for those who haven’t seen it, be amazed!

Mind blown.

Gangnam Style was released in July 2012 by Korean pop singer PSY.  He has been around a while as this is his 6th album. Gangnam Style was the first song released and  debuted at number 1 in Korea. The song states what kind of guy PSY is and what kind of girl he is looking for

It roughly means ‘Your man has Gangnam Style’ and ‘Oppa’ is an affectionate term girls use to address older guy friends or a boyfriend.

The song takes a bit of a jab at the class system in South Korea with PSY’s signature move dubbed ‘horse riding dance.’ He has managed to turn horse riding, an activity associated with the wealthy, into something hilarious.

International media began to take notice of it in August and has snowballed through social media and forums. There are even flash mobs popping up.

The spread of the video has been helped along by celebrities talking about it, an appearance at the MTV awards and the video being shared throughout social media. It has been seen over 235 MILLION times on Youtube and is the highest K-Pop (Korean pop music) video ever.

“Gangnam Style” refers to the extreme wealth and ‘Beverly Hills’ like district of Seoul in South Korea where people live a luxurious lifestyle and young people go to party. The clip is a satire of conspicuous consumption in Korea, so pretty much the government is encouraging people to spend and get into debt because it makes the economy look good.

PSY has just signed with Justin Biebers manager, so you can imagine we’ll be seeing a lot more of him!

And for all those who want to learn the dance and show off on the weekend, here you go! 🙂
